The Green ?: Revolution or Not?

Was the Green revolution truly revolutionary?

What makes a revolution? Several factors are involved in deciding what is a revolution, but the main fact is, that if it was a huge change that affected many people, it is a revolution. That is why I fervently believe that the green revolution was a revolution, and an important one at that. It affected one of the most important things we do as humans, farming, in one of the most populated regions of the world, Asia, in 3 main ways. After the green revolution farming was forever changed, by fertilizers, irrigation, and genetically modified plants.

The first thing that was changed by the green revolution was fertilizer. Soil is not an endless supply of vitamins and minerals to feed your plants with, and it must be renewed. Before the green revolution, farmers mainly used manure and compost for fertilizers, if at all. Plants grew normally, and he ground grew steadily worse in many areas. When chemical fertilizers arrived, farming was changed, and possibly not in a good way. Now, with very little effort you simply needed to spray, dig under, or otherwise add a chemical fertilizer, which would make your plants, grow bigger and better. There were drawbacks to this however, including groundwater poisoning from fertilizers that went elsewhere than the earth close to the plants, and the fertilizers could damage the plants or nearby insects or other animals. Also if too much fertilizer was used plants could grow too big, and simply fall over. However, even with all these drawbacks, it cannot be denied that fertilizer caused a great change in the agriculture department, but whether it was good or bad is still to be determined.

The second major change in the green revolution was irrigation. Before, farming depended mainly on the weather. Crops were watered when it rained, and if it didn’t rain for too long, your crops died. With the green revolution, these things changed. People started looking for other methods of getting water to their plants, and they found them. People did this in several ways. One way was to build a canal from a nearby water source to your crops to let the water flow from the river, lake, or other source of water straight to your crops. This generally provided a steady and almost effortless way to get water to your crops. Another, but later way was to simply pump it out of the water source. Another method for getting water was putting it in a reservoir, and using that for watering your plants. A third, but not final way was to dig a well and pump the water out, and use that to water your crops. These methods all had their advantages, but they drained water from the ground and from lakes and rivers, which slowly but surely drains the supply of fresh water. Another problem with this is that if you get water from a source that was contaminated with a chemical, like here in Bangladesh with arsenic, that chemical will be put into your crops, which will in turn poison people. Again, this change has had problems, but it is still a great change in the realm of farming.

The final thing that was made in the green revolution were genetically modified plants, otherwise known as GM’s. These are plants that have had their genetics modified, to make them more resilient to certain bugs, weathers, make them more drought resistant, or to increase their yields. These new plants were a new sensation, and now thousands of fields are growing plants that have been genetically modified. This is a completely new thing, and was also a great change in farming. Now crops could grow more food on them, and do all sorts of other things. This was possibly the greatest change in the green revolution, the ability to change a plant’s nature, and shape it to fit your desires a bit better. This had several drawbacks as well, including that they may not be safe, that allergies might be made worse by mixing different plants together, that they would hurt small farmers in several ways, and that it may be unethical to do this. However it is still done, and whether people like it or not, these plants are a change that are here to stay.

Now, the evidence shown to the fact that it was a great revolutionary revolution is overwhelming. South-East Asia and other parts of the world were changed irrevocably, by the three main things, fertilizers, irrigation, and GMs.There cam be no doubts in anybody’s minds, the green revolution was a huge change on the whole, and therefore it was a revolution.

Here are the answers to some SS questions that were given in class.

1. What are the population trends around the world and what factors are influencing those trends?

In China and Asia, the main trend is to have more and more children. The populations of these countries are shooting up, because so many people are having more babies. In other parts of the world, such as Europe, Japan, and the US, less people are having a lot of chilren, and tHow he populations are slowly but surely decreasing, or in some cases staying the same.

2. What is being done to stabalize global population growth?

More people are becoming aware that having children might not be the best thing for them at that current time, and more and more preventative measures are being made ot prevent childbirths.

3. How are resources distributed and utilized?

The main way that resources are distrubuted and utilized are the people that find the resource take it, procces or manufacture something out of it, and finally sell it. Because of this many people do not have sufficient neccesities, because of lack of funds.

4. What are the effects of humanity's consumtion of the world's resources?

With so many people on the earth to distribute resources to lots of resources are required, and lots are being taken from the environment. Every day lots of coal, oil, wood, and other things are being mass mined, produced, or harvested and all these have an effect on the environment. Oil and coal for example when burned release Co2 emissions, which are not good for the environment, because of the greenhouse effects. Less trees in turn take in less Co2 and make less oxygen out of it, which is helping the greenhouse effects.

5. What are possible solutions to problems associated with population trends and use of resources?

The main solution to using too much oil and coal is to conserve. Every day a ton of electricity is produced, but if everyone on the planet attempted to save energy we would use a lot less, causing less to be produced, and therefore less resources being used up. Alternatives such as biofuels and solar home panels could also help with the increasing demand for electricity.

Second Response Question

Ok, this is the seconds blog post about bullying.

Response Question: It is 10:00 pm on a Wednesday night; you have finished your homework and you are chatting on MSN with three other friends. After 10 minutes two more friends ask to join the chat. By 10:30 pm five more people have joined and it is fun; however, there is a joke said about one of the people, rapidly followed by an insult. At first, no one knows how to respond, then seconds later a message pops up stating, “I didn’t say that! It isn’t me saying these things. Someone is using my name. What is going on here?”

What is the issue involved in this scenario? Why is this serious?

What would be a responsible way to handle this situation?

How could a situation like this be resolved? How would one of the three main characters from The Revealers deal with this situation?


Response: If i was in this situation as a bystander there would be several things I would do. First I would need to recognize who is involved in the scenario. Obviously the person who is being targeted is involved, but also the person who is using the program. Also, anybody that laughs or does not care about this is a participant. The rest are bystanders, sort of involved, but only if they choose to be. The issue here is that someone is imitating someone else, and they are saying things that are not respectful. It is not good if you are pretending to say inapropriate or something else by using someone elses mouth. I think that the obvious solution to this would be for all the people in the chat to impress upon whoever it is that it is not cool, nor is it respecting the person who is being targeted. Involving other people in this situation would be a bad move, just giving it publicity. I think that the 3 main characters would do something similar to this, but simply publicize it, and let everyone know that it is not cool, funny or anything else. Doing this is a horrible thing, which should be stopped.

First Blog Prompt

Blog Question: Is bullying a rite of passage of childhood and adolescence? Is it apart of the maturation process one needs to go through to reach adulthood? Explain. Mrs. Hogeboom brings up this topic on page 108.

Response: No, bullying is definetly not a rite of passage to adulthood. What bullying is is a way to make some people feel good, and some people feel bad. The victim is not passing a sort of test or rite while being bullied or harassed, and it does not change them for the better. What it simply does it removes them, makes them withdraw and start trusting nobody and nothing. They use almost all their energy trying to avoid the bully, and even when it stops they try to stay out of sight, not attract attention. Even those that manage to stop it aren't changed for the better as they just learn to be wary of people and always have defensed focused. If somebody thinks that bullying is a rite or test to prove your matureness that person should think about what he/she would do if they were bullied, and how they would react to the cruel torture.

Hello people, I have just started a blog for my LA class at AIS/D. This is to help us understand characters in a book we are reading, The Revealers. These characters use the school system to inform the school about bullying, through the internet and blog-like things. I hope that i will have fun doing this.
